A Clean, Well-Lighted Place was my senior thesis project while at the University of Michigan School of Art & Design. The piece is a digital, interactive storybook about a lonely boy named Gus who lives on an intergalactic telephone station. At a certain point in the story, Gus needs your help, by sending him text messages to charge his spaceship.

The piece took seven months to create, including concept creation, basic programming, extensive 3D modeling and animating, and optimizing for the web.

The project is viewable at www.helpg.us More details about the creation can be found on my blog, or my final written thesis.

This project was created in a studio with Doug Hessltine during my Fall 2011 semester at the University of Michigan. The prompt was to create a large scale, print infographic, with the content completely left open to us. I decided to look around for the most boring subject or information, and try and make it "visually exciting". That term "visually exciting" turned out to be too general, and I narrowed my scope to making something "deceptively interesting".

Upon seeing the image, the illustration and colors are meant to draw you in. Once you realize what you're looking at, you feel slighted but note that you had shown and interest in something everyone dreads and finds boring, a 1040 income tax return. The information on the 1040 is cluttered and cramped, and the infographic is supposed to display a similar feeling while also showing a light satire on all the places your tax dollars end up.

This was a group project that I worked on with Teshia Treuhaft, Jill Brandwein, and Ryan Thurmer.

"The coffee market in this day and age is stronger than at any other time in history. With more and more people stopping by their favorite shop for their morning caffeine, the amount of styrofoam cups used is growing astronomically. Our team set out to find a way for some part of the coffee routine to be reused.

We discovered that with each cup of coffee sold, the majority were being sent out with a coffee sleeve to protect the consumer’s hand. These sleeves would then be disposed after each cup of coffee.

Our team has devised an idea that would encourage the reuse of coffee heat protectors, called Greensleeves. Greensleeves would be used for a standard cup of coffee, but after finishing, the user would hang on to the sleeve for their next cup. Then, after 10 uses, the consumer could trade in the sleeve for a free cup of coffee.

The Greensleeves idea gives the motivation to the user to keep their sleeve for more than one cup of coffee, and when they are finished with the sleeve, it has to be turned into the coffee shop, where it can then be disposed of properly."

Spring 2010
MSuite was an iPhone application being worked on by students in the University of Michigan Electrical Engineering/Computer Science Dept. The application was being designed to be a mobile version of CTools, a student collaboration site used throughout the University. (Other applications were to be added to the suite as well).

I applied to work with the group in early 2010 and produced logos and application graphics for the program suite seen here. I intended to complete a website for the group in the summer of 2010, but ran into health issues and had to stop work. As far as I know, the group is still meeting and preparing the iPhone application, as well as an Android implementation.

Fall 2009 - Spring 2010
I started this group in the University of Michigan School of Art & Design. The goal was to teach students how to create and design their own websites to display their portfolio. I was assisted by Natalie Freilich, Taylor Dodson, and Yi Li as officers, and we ran the group for two semesters. It was a great learning experience for me (and hopefully all who attended as well) on how to teach, create simplistic lessons, and help people get started in web design. I ended the group in the spring of 2010 as I wasn't finding it to be the best way to get peoples' portfolios online quickly.

Spring 2010
These are designs that I used as inspirations for other work. I usually sketch random designs to try ideas for new work, but I tried taking these further. I initially made a diagram about my thoughts and how my mind was working that day, then I illustrated that path in both. For the future, I am trying to get these printed and laser cut so that I can layer them as a simple low-relief cut. (Recently translated these into 3D, going to try and fabricate them)
